We’re aware of the news surrounding an isolated quality issue we’ve uncovered with a limited number of our NUTRO™ Chewy Apple Treats.

Here are the facts:

What is the quality issue?
We’ve discovered a quality issue with potential presence of mold in a select number of our NUTRO™ Chewy Apple Treats. In an abundance of caution, we are working closely with our retail partners to replace, upon request, the limited product. Fortunately, we have found the root cause and have already rectified the production issue.

Is this a recall?
This is not a recall. In an abundance of caution, we are working closely with our retail partners to replace, upon request, the limited product. We apologize for any confusion. This was posted incorrectly as a voluntary recall – that information has been updated.

Are other NUTRO™ Products impacted?
No other Nutro products are affected. The issue was is isolated to a select number of NUTRO™ Chewy Apple Treats.

How did mold get onto the treats?
Mold spores occur naturally in the environment and may grow into visible mold when there is high moisture levels. Semi moist treats contain a high moisture level that could promote mold growth. We manage the risks of mold through production controls, recipe formulation and packaging materials.

Is mold toxic?
There are many types of mold. In our food safety risk assessment (Based on internal and third party independent testing), the identified mold is non-toxic.

Can this mold issue cause harm to my pet?
We have received no complaints of illness and believe that most dogs will reject products that exhibit signs of mold. In this case, if mold is present, it will be completely visible. We have tracked the issue down to a small date range and have a team working with our retailers to replace, upon request, the affected product.

What is Mars Petcare/ NUTRO™ Brand doing to address the quality issue?
In an abundance of caution, we are working closely with our retail partners to replace, upon request, the limited product. Fortunately, we have found the root cause and have already rectified the production issue.
